TechNotes News and views from the world of technology Telegraph Digital Life Play.com already one of the biggest online retailers of CDs and DVDs is attempting to win over thousands of music fans that can not use iTunes Apple s own music store because they do not own an iPod. Kylie Minogue s new single Wow will be available on Play.com Apple locks the majority of the tracks available in its store with special Digital Rights Management Software. This means most tracks downloaded from iTunes can only be played on an Apple machine be it a Mac computer or an iPod. Play.com is promising that all its tracks will be DRM free meaning they can be played on any computer mobile phone or MP player. They will also be selling chart singles such as Kylie Minogue s Wow and Adele s Chasing Pavements for pence compared to iTunes which charges pence. Analysts said they were excited by any serious rival to iTunes but the launch was fraught with difficulties said one. Play.com s assault on the million digital music market comes just two weeks after the disastrous and high profile launch of Qtrax which promised free tracks paid for by advertising on the site. advertisement However it emerged that not a single major record deal had signed up to the service. Play.com has signed up EMI and some independent labels meaning it can offer about million tracks including all of Pink Floyd Coldplay Robbie Williams and Paul McCartney. However it has yet to secure an agreement with the other major labels Sony Warner or Universal. And while its tracks are cheaper than those offered by iTunes Apple has agreed to lower its UK prices later this year to about pence. Dan Kryan a music analyst at Screen Digest said It s not going to be plain sailing for Play.com even though they are a major retailer. At the moment the online music market is driven by hardware sales. And that means Apple s iTunes is completely dominant because per cent of all MP players sold in the UK last year were iPods. Other music experts reckon that the launch could start a serious price war. James Suddaby editor of ILikeMusic.com said It is great news that someone is challenging iTunes in the UK. It is only a matter of time before the other record labels are persuaded to go DRM Free in the UK like we have seen in the US. DRM Free gives music fans choice and that can only be a good thing .
